Michael Cabry, a magisterial district judge in Honey Brook, Chester County, is facing felony theft charges along with elections code violations.
Cabry has been a magisterial district judge since 2000, and in his most recent reelection in 2017, he ran unopposed.
The grand jury presentment says in 2016, he started a political action committee, Citizens for Cabry.
The campaign finance reports were incomplete, but the grand jury found purchases on the PAC’s debit card for groceries, laundry services, hotel stays, along with about $3,200 in withdrawals at several casinos around the state.
It says he wagered nearly $111,000 in 2017, with a net loss of about $9,000.
The grand jury says there is evidence the purchases were not connected to the campaign but rather for personal expenses.
Attorney General Josh Shapiro says Cabry had a duty to uphold the law, but instead he took advantage of the trust placed in him by supporters.
Cabry’s attorney says they have no comment at this time.
